You probably know Breitling from being the pilot’s watch. The brand is well known for its Navitimer watches. Some people love the watches from Breitling while others run as fast as possible when seeing a Breitling boutique.
There are some things you need to know before making your purchase of a Breitling watch.
So what are those 5 things? Read on to find that out.
Breitling Watches Can Be Expensive
Just like other “luxury” watch brands like Rolex or Omega, Breitling watches can be expensive.
The Breitling brand sells its ENDURANCE PRO entry model for $3.150,-, for that amount you get a lightweight everyday sports chronograph watch. The options here are limited to 7 different colours.
You can also get their popular SUPEROCEAN AUTOMATIC 42 for a bit more, selling for $3.700,-.
If you want to go all-in at the Breitling boutique you can get their flagship NAVITIMER B01 chronograph for just $37.500,-, for that kind of money you’re getting an 18k red gold watch with Breitling’s iconic pilot chronograph.
So you could get yourself the most stunning Breitling right now or gather 10 friends get them all an ENDURANCE PRO in the colour they like, and still have money left to buy everyone dinner.
History Of Breitling
Breitling was founded in 1884 by a Swiss technicus Léon Breitling. He first sold stopwatches and measuring instruments to watchmakers.
After IWC made the first wristwatch in 1899, Breitling had the idea to make a wrist stopwatch. This seemed very helpful for pilots.
In 1936 Breitling was the supplier of the British Royal Air Force. The Navitimer as we know it today was born. Cause Breitling was a Swiss company and neutral during the second world war, Breitling also supplied the German Luftwaffe.
After Breitling had some financial problems the company came in hands of a Swiss businessman who wanted to bring Breitling to the public. After a good marketing campaign where the brand gained international attention cause of a non-stop balloon flight with the Breitling Orbiter, it gained success.
Good Value For The Money
Breitling watches do keep their value. They do not increase in value as much as other brands like Rolex, Omega or Patek Phillipe. They don’t lose a lot of value.
Take the Breitling Navitimer World, for example, the watch was worth around $3.700,- back in 2010, right now it is around $4.300,-. Not a huge increase but not a loss in value.
So don’t hesitate to look on the secondary market for your Breitling watch.
Investment Or Daily Watch
Do not buy a Breitling as an investment unless you really know the market of these watches. Most Breitling watches don’t go up in value as Rolex does.
Don’t get me wrong Breitling watches don’t lose their value the moment you put them on your wrist. They do keep their value.
If you want to get yourself a new Breitling go get one to use as a daily watch.
People’s Opinion On Breitling
People tend to have an opinion when it comes to Breitling watches. Some like me do like their Navitimer but discuss their other models. Others love the whole brand, while the last group hates it.
Whatever your opinion is. I see that Breitling isn’t as loved as Rolex or Omega. When I placed a poll online with the question if a Breitling watch is worth it. Of the 213 voters, only 71 said “yes”. While 98 said “some models” and 44 voted “no”.
Compare that to a poll I did if an Omega watch is worth it. Of the 160 voters, 90 answered “yes”. While 54 said “some models”, only 9 voted for “no”.
So, Is A Breitling Watch Worth It?
For me, a brand new Breitling is not worth it. There are some nice models out there on the secondary market tho.
If you love the history of the brand and their heritage with the Navitimer. Then a Breitling watch is worth the money.
If you’re looking for a daily watch, then a Breitling watch might be just for you.
If you’re looking for a watch as an investment, I would recommend you to look further. Don’t buy a Breitling watch as an investment.
